Runners kick off season with Nikiski Class Races

Stretching out

Posted: Sunday, August 18, 2002

Cross country runners from the peninsula's high schools, joined by squads from Grace Christian and Bethel, got a chance to stretch their legs for the first time this season at the Nikiski Class Races Friday at Nikiski.

"This was my first competitive race of the season, and it was about trying to get my thoughts together," said Homer's Monte Garroutte, the winner of the boys junior-senior race. "I have my competitive instinct back. If you're in a race and you don't really care, you won't do as well as you should, so I felt like this race was pretty good in that respect."

Garroutte, a junior, covered the hilly, 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 21 seconds, but posted the second-fastest time of the day as Cook Inlet Academy's Brian Beeson won the freshman-sophomore race in a sizzling 18:04.

"I was pretty psyched to beat Trevor (Baldwin of Kenai)," Beeson, a sophomore, said of his performance. "He's a pretty good runner and he gave me a run for it."

Baldwin finished 1:03 behind Beeson, while Skyview's J.J. Bilby was the first freshman across the line, taking third in the freshman-sophomore race in 20:02.

Skyview's Marci Mohler, a sophomore, set the pace in the girls freshman-sophomore race, winning the event in 20:50, 1:22 ahead of second-place freshman Sarah Marinez of Grace. Sophomore Rachel McCarten of Soldotna was third in 22:27.

"It was the first race of the season on probably the hardest course," Mohler said. "It was pretty hard, but I liked it a lot. It was a nice day to do it, too."

Nikiski's Katie Floyd (492) and Liz Lettington (490) lead Bethel's Amy Allen up a hill during the combined junior/senior race.

In the girls junior-senior race, junior Aleta Phelps from Homer ran 21:38 to place first, followed by senior Jacqueline Davies of Bethel in 21:58.

"I felt pretty good the whole way," Phelps said. "I didn't start out in front, but one by one, I passed everybody."

Phelps said the hills were tough, but her strategy of catching the next runner in front of her paid off.

"I just kind of go and pass people when I see them, if I can, and not worry so much about time," Phelps said.
