Library announces upcoming events
The Kenai Community Library will be closed Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 for Labor Day weekend. The library will reopen at 10 a.m. Sept. 2.
The Writers' Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the library conference room. The meeting is open to anyone who enjoys writing for profit or pleasure.
The Kenai Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 in the conference room to discuss "Once Upon the River Love," by Andrei Makine.

UAA's LitSite Alaska commended by Bush
The University of Alaska Anchorage's LitSite Alaska has received the attention of First Lady Laura Bush. Bush called LitSite Alaska "an outstanding Web community for families, teachers and Alaskans of all ages.
"The wealth of information, insights and stories on this site will provide hours of fascinating reading for anyone who is curious about the wonderful history, diversity and traditions of Alaska and Alaskans," she said. "Young readers especially will find here a treasure trove of resources for discovering and exploring this magnificent state."

Applications available for beautification awards
The Homer Chamber of Commerce and Kachemak Bay Board of Realtors are accepting nominations for the Community Beautification Awards program, which recognizes individuals and businesses for their beautification efforts.
Awards will be given in the following categories: Most Attractive Business, Most Attractive Residence, Most Improved, Most Creative and Judges' Choice.
Nominations must include the nominee name, location and category. All nominations are must be submitted by Sept. 1 to the chamber at 201 Sterling Highway, by fax at (907) 235-8766 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. The winners will be judged the first week of September and announced at the chamber luncheon Sept. 23.
