ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A Russian man stole a rowboat from Little Diomede Island and attempted to row across the Bering Strait to Russia, Alaska State Troopers said.

Igor Maslov took the 8-foot fiberglass boat Wednesday, but returned to the island after it began taking on water, trooper said. He was arrested by the village police officer and was charged with second-degree theft and fourth-degree criminal mischief. Maslov was being held in Nome in lieu of $500 bail.

He told authorities he was trying to reach Big Diomede Island, Russia, which is about 2 1/2 miles from Little Diomede. From there he said he planned to continue to the Russian mainland, said trooper Eugene Fowler in Nome.
