Bomar, Anderson fire 1-over at Kenai

Two tied for lead at Open

Posted: Sunday, August 19, 2001

The Kenai Peninsula continued to be pretty good to Anchorage pro Billy Bomar Saturday in the opening round of the third annual Kenai Chrysler Open at the Kenai Golf Course.

Bomar fired a 1-over-par 73 to take the lead in the two-day tournament along with Brian Anderson, a former University of Alaska Anchorage basketball player who is now a pro at Moose Run Golf Course at Fort Richardson.

By resting atop the leader board, Bomar put himself in line to claim some of the Open's $20,000 purse. The first-place winner receives $5,000.

If Bomar is to win significant cash, it wouldn't be the first time he left the peninsula this summer with his wallet sagging a little lower in his back pocket.

In mid-July, Bomar defeated a handful of pros in the Wells Fargo Alaska Alaskan Professional Golfers Skins Game at Birch Ridge Golf Course and won $2,000.

Bomar was sailing along in the lead Saturday at 1-under-par until the 17th hole, a 452-yard par 4. Bomar got into trouble on the hole and took a double bogey.

Meanwhile, Anderson was birdieing two of the final four holes to pull into a tie with Bomar.

In order to make off with first, Bomar also will have to hold off challenges from Tony Grimes and Jim Hennesy, who are both sitting at 75.

Grimes is a Palmer pro who holds the course record at Kenai, while Hennesy is the defending Kenai Chrysler Open champion and a pro who works on the North Slope.

The top foursome will tee off today at the Kenai Golf Course at 11:10 a.m. The public is welcome to come out and watch.
