School hosts open house

Redoubt Elementary will host its open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today. Supply lists, school lunch information and bus schedules will be available. Parents and students are encouraged to attend, meet teachers and tour classrooms.

Drivers’ safety class scheduled

AARP is offering a drivers’ safety class today and Saturday at the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center and Sept. 2 and 3 at the Kenai River Center in Soldotna. Teens and their parents are welcome. The cost is $10 for materials. For more information and times, call Vivian Swanson at 260-3966.

Play auditions held

Kenai Performers will hold auditions for a one-act play by Peter Shafer at 6 p.m. today and Saturday at the Old Town Playhouse in Kenai. For more information, call Elle at 776-8645.

Swim team tryouts set

Soldotna High School is starting its swimming season. Tryouts are held weekdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Participants do not need to be experienced swimmers or divers to join. For more information, call 262-7419.

Home-school group meeting planned

The Soldotna Homeschool Support Group will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church at the “Y” in Soldotna. A martial arts demonstration will be given.

CES seeks volunteers

Central Emergency Service is seeking firefighter and emergency medical services volunteers for its Firefighter One Academy beginning Sept. 1. Recruits also are needed from the Kasilof and Funny River areas. Participants must be 18 to apply. LeeShore radiothon fund-raiser slated

The 21st annual KRSM-LeeShore Radiothon fund-raiser will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 12 on KSRM Radio 92 AM. Cash and in-kind donations pledged during the radiothon support the agency’s services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and its community and school prevention programs.

Dog training seminar set

Peninsula Dog Obedience Group will host Kay Laurence, a clicker trainer from England, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17 at its facility on Kalifornsky Beach Road. Clicker training is a reward-based training method for animals.

Laurence’s presentation will cover education, experience, training methods and focus on the whole dog, not just training.

The cost is $75 per day or $140 for both days. It is open to the public. Owners may bring their dogs if they are well-behaved. For more information, call 262-6846 or e-mail
