Panthers plan to ride Bosick

Bigger line, outside speed should give senior more space

Posted: Sunday, August 20, 2006

It’s no secret that the Skyview football team plans to give the majority of the carries this year to Greg Bosick, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound senior.

“You and everybody else knows it,” said Skyview coach Phil Sheridan, who will be in his third year at the helm of the Panthers.

Last season, Bosick had 509 yards on 97 carries as the Panthers went 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the Northern Lights Conference to miss the playoffs.

Since then, Sheridan said Bosick has improved by adding 10 to 15 pounds and attending numerous football camps.

“He’s going to be all-world,” Sheridan said. “He’s going to be our leader.”

The Panthers lost 15 players to graduation, but Sheridan said his team does not lack experience.

Last season, the Panthers went down to Homer on the last week of the season and notched a 19-13 victory. Homer could have clinched a playoff spot with a victory, but had to wait for Soldotna to lose to Kenai to seal a playoff bid.

“A lot of the returners played a big role in that victory over Homer,” Sheridan said. “Even though we had all those seniors, we had three starting linemen last year that were sophomores. We also had juniors with starting experience.”

Added to that experience will be the fruits of an in-school recruiting effort by Sheridan. The coach convinced some soccer players to come out for the team.

“Kids believe in what we are doing,” Sheridan said. “Everybody just got their friends to come out for the team.”

Junior Eddie Buffington will see most of the snaps at quarterback, with sophomore Michael Thornton and junior Ryan Wehrli also in the mix.

At running back, senior Brad Mallette, junior Conrad Cobb and senior Justin Miller will get the carries after Bosick.

Seniors Rusty Singleton and David Blossom will play tight end, while seniors Justin Miller and Tanner Hansen will play slot back.

Seniors Buck Kunz and Jake Bauer will play receiver for Skyview. Both are soccer players in their first year of varsity football.

“Even though they’re first-year players, they should help us because they’re athletic and they’re fully matured seniors,” Sheridan said. “One of our goals was to increase our outside speed. We’ve definitely gotten better in that area.”

Sheridan said that if teams have to honor an outside threat, they won’t be able to stack the line of scrimmage to stop Bosick.

The other ingredient that will make Bosick more dangerous is solid line play. Juniors Richie Shirnberg, Josh DeTavernier and Patrick Sheridan all started last year and are better after a year of weight lifting, according to Sheridan. The other line slots will be filled by sophomore Kenny Mahan and senior Josh Allison, with junior Brady Jones also expected to play a key role.

“We’ll be a little better on offense,” Sheridan said. “I really suspect we will be able to move the ball.”

Sheridan said the Panthers moved the ball well last year, but had a tough time stopping teams. He said the team has been working hard on its defense for that reason.

The mix on the defensive line will include Cobb, DeTavernier, Shirnberg, Allison and Singleton. Sheridan said the linebacking group of Sheridan, Bosick, Buffington and Mallette should be pretty good.

Sheridan also wants the soccer speed to pay dividends on defense, so he’ll play Kunz and Bauer in the secondary. Other members of the secondary will be Wehrli, Thornton and Brad Lapp.
