The first day of public school for Kenai Peninsula Borough School District students is Monday. The following schools will hold registration and/or open house events:
* Soldotna Elementary School -- open house will be held at 5:30 p.m. today.
Students new to the district will need up-to-date immunization records and birth certificate. Supply lists are available at the front office and online at http://www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us + Schools + Soldotna Elementary. Class lists will be posted on the front window.
* Soldotna Middle School -- Orientation will be held for seventh-grade and new students from 10 a.m. to noon Friday. Students are asked to bring their schedules. Lockers may be decorated on this day. The office will be open from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Call 260-2500 for more information.
* Redoubt Elementary School -- open house for students and parents will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Class lists, supply lists, and bus information will be available at the open house.
The start date for kindergartners has changed. They will begin school Monday. They will start late on the first day of school only at 10 a.m. Thereafter, their hours will be regular school hours with an 8:45 a.m. start time.

The Disabled American Veterans will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. today at VFW Post No. 10046 in Soldotna. For more information, call 398-3030.
The Jerry V. Horn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10046 is seeking donations for its garage and bake sale on Friday and Saturday. Items may be dropped off at the post at 134 N. Birch St. in Soldotna.

Outdoor educator Dan Pascucci will perform interactive songs about science and nature at noon Friday at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. The performance is for all ages. A $4 donation for seniors and $5 donation for adults is requested for admission to the center, which includes the lunchtime concert. Children are free of charge. The center is at 11471 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai.
The annual 4-H Market Livestock Auction will take place at noon Saturday at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik. Beef, pork, lamb, goat, turkeys, chickens and rabbits will be for sale.
There will be a buyers' barbecue following the auction.

The Sterling Senior Center is hosting its annual barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The menu includes ribs, chicken, beans, corn on the cob, coleslaw, garlic bread and dessert.

The Boys & Girls Club Kenai Clubhouse will be closed Monday through Aug. 28. The school year clubhouse will start Aug. 31.

The North Peninsula Recreation Service Area monthly board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Nikiski pool. It is open to the public.

The Kenai Kennel Club is offering a Canine Good Citizen class Aug. 25 at its facility at the former Robinson's Mini Mall at Mile 14.5 of Kalifornsky Beach Road. The program consists of a five-week class, where students take their dogs through a series of situations designed to teach the dog to be under control, such as in a crowd of people and around other dogs.
The class is open to all dogs --mixed breeds and purebreds.

Volunteers at Soldotna Public Library will hold their monthly used book sale from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The books included are for all ages.
The library also accepts books and puzzles in good condition.
The LeeShore Center will hold its monthly board meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the large conference room at he center.
