Play auditions begin

The Kenai Performers will hold auditions for the play "Steel Magnolias" at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Old Town Playhouse in Kenai.

The play calls for six women ranging in age from late teens to seniors. People also are needed to help with sets, costumes, props, etc.

Harvest auction deadline nears

The deadline is 6 p.m. Aug. 29 for local artists donating original pieces of art for the 10th annual Harvest Art Exhibition and Auction.

Gallery attendants will receive art during the last two weeks of this month during regular business hours at the Kenai Fine Arts Center, 816 Cook St. in Old Towne Kenai, across from the Oilers Bingo Hall.

Artists from all over the Kenai Peninsula are encouraged to participate in the exhibit and auction, which includes photography, paintings in acrylic, watercolor, oil, works in stone, ceramic and fiber.

The art will be on display through September and then auctioned.

Teen writers sought

The Clarion is seeking students in grades nine through 12 from central Kenai Peninsula high schools interested in writing for our Verbatim column.

The column is designed to let teens voice their opinions on topics that affect their daily life -- home, family, school, peers, social pressures, etc. The column length is 350 words minimum and 500 maximum.

The deadline to submit a sample column for consideration is 5 p.m. Sept. 11. Submissions must include first and last name, school, grade, mailing address and a contact phone number. Late and/or incomplete submissions will not be considered.

Entries must be submitted by e-mail to schools@peninsulaclarion.com.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent Sept. 28 by e-mail. Writers accepted for Verbatim will be required to attend a mandatory meeting Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the Clarion.

Senior center seeks art

The Soldotna Senior Citizens Center is seeking artists to display artwork at the center for a month at a time, beginning in 2010. Artists will be responsible for putting art up and taking it down.

Kids' reading program continues

Triumvirate Bookstore in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna is hosting a Frequent Reading Program.

Kids may sign up at the bookstore, pick out one free book, a reading calendar and program rules.

Bookstore hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
