A U.S. Senate candidate forum, hosted by the Soldotna and Kenai chambers of commerce, will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Kenai Christian Church in Kenai. Admission is free.
The 10th annual Homer Mariner Iron Man Triathlon is scheduled for Sept. This race is dedicated to Val Kirsis, a triathlete. For the first time it will be open to team competition, or individual entries. Start time is 8 a.m.; course is a 1,000-yard swim (at the Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center at Homer High School), 15-mile bike ride and 5-mile run. Early "Iron Man" entry $50 (with T-shirt) or team entry $100 (with three T-shirts). For information please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will host a Wild Berry Fun Day today. Wild berry activities and crafts take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Refuge Environmental Education Center in Soldotna. Wild berry snacks and drinks will be available. A free drawing will be held for wild berry products.
Guided berry identification walks will be held throughout the day. For families with younger children, an 1/4 mile walk lasting 30 minutes will take place at 12:30, 1, 2 and 3 p.m. For those ages 10 and older, a 3/4 mile hike lasting 45 minutes will take place at 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

A free picnic to honor all who have served in the military will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Kenai Park Strip on Main Street in Kenai. Activities planned are blood pressure checks, live music, VA reps on site to answer questions, door prizes, VAVs representatives, games for children.
The Friday Night Bowling League (Wild and Wacky) will start today at 6 p.m. in Kenai at Alaska Lanes. If you are interested in having some fun this winter on Friday nights, we still have openings for more teams. For more info call Judy at 398-7658.
Boxes for Heroes will be collecting care package items at Walmart in Kenai from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. Some of the items collected will be peanuts, trail mix, beef jerky, gummy bears, cheese/peanut butter crackers, granola/energy bars, Crystal Light, instant coffee/tea, instant soups, hard candy and other various snack items. Baby wipes, foot powder, lubricating eye drops, cotton swabs, bug repellent, lip balm, feminine hygiene products, razors/shaving cream, pens/pencils, envelopes/notepads, Ziploc baggies all sizes -- any and all support would be appreciated.
