NEW YORK -- Vickie Johnson scored 19 points to lead the New York Liberty into the Eastern Conference finals with a 75-60 win over the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night.

The Liberty will face the Washington Mystics at the MCI Center on Thursday in the best-of-three series.

Tamika Whitmore added 17 points in the finale of the first-round conference playoff before 12,471 at Madison Square Garden.

Nikki McCray led Indiana with 14 points. Rookie of the Year Tamika Catchings, who fell hard on her right hand and left the game for X-rays in the first half, had 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting. She scored just four points in the second half.

Trailing 33-29 at intermission, the Liberty opened the second half with a 14-3 run behind five points by Johnson. Catchings then briefly left the game again with a lower back strain after colliding with Crystal Robinson. In the first half, she sat out four minutes.

Johnson's driving layup gave New York a 51-41 lead. Catchings made her only basket of the second half -- a 3-pointer -- to trail 56-47 with 8:57 left.

Starzz 75, Comets 72

HOUSTON -- Natalie Williams scored a career-high 25 points as the Utah Starzz eliminated the Houston Comets from the WNBA playoffs with a 75-72 win Tuesday night in a game delayed when referee Bill Stokes collapsed early in the second half.

Play was stopped for 25 minutes when Stokes collapsed near the scorer's table during a timeout with 15:33 left in the game. Stokes was treated immediately by medical officials from both teams.

He was taken to a Southwest Memorial Hospital where team officials said he was listed in critical, but stable condition. WNBA president Val Ackerman left the game and joined Stokes at the hospital. The Starzz will play for the Western Conference championship against the defending WNBA champion Los Angeles Sparks.

Sheryl Swoopes, named league MVP before the game, led Houston with 28 points. Ferdinand finished with 18 points for the Starzz and Margo Dydek had 14 points.
