KOTZEBUE (AP) A suicidal Kivalina youth was arrested on assault charges Sunday night after he punched out a school window, pointed a gun at the school principal and fired shots in the air.

Alaska State Troopers said the 15-year-old boy was intoxicated when he became upset and attempted to run into the ocean to commit suicide.

Kivalina School Principal Gerald Pickner tried to calm the youth down, but troopers said the boy punched out a school window and then ran home, where he grabbed a shotgun.

The boy then walked back to the school, shooting off the gun. He also pointed the gun at Pickner, then put the gun to this own head, troopers said. The boy shot two more shots into the air and then ran away.

He was arrested on a variety of charges, including misconduct involving a weapon and assault.
