SEWARD (AP) A University of Alaska Fairbanks research boat picked up a distressed recreational boater Tuesday night near Seward.

UAF officials said the 133-foot vessel Alpha Helix was conducting oceanographic research about 8:50 p.m. near the entrance to Resurrection Bay when the crew spotted distress flares.

The boat headed in stormy weather toward the flares and picked up a man from the water. Crew members treated him immediately for moderate hypothermia and took him to Seward, UAF officials said.

The man refused onshore medical care and was given a ride home.

The Alpha Helix is owned by the National Science Foundation and operated by the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
