Smoking suitcase leads to drug bust

Jennifer Lynn Powell, 38, of Sterling, was caught with more than two ounces of marijuana on Thursday.

The Kenai Fire Department and Kenai Police Department responded to a report that a suitcase was smoking at the Kenai Municipal Airport around 3 p.m. Grant Aviation employees said they saw what appeared to be smoke emanating from a suitcase.

The "smoke" was actually discharge from an aerosol can of hair spray that was in the bag, Powell said.

Upon inspection, KPD officer Jim Johnson found approximately 2.15 ounces of marijuana in the suitcase, which belonged to Powell, said KPD officer Aaron Turnage. Officers also found less than one gram of marijuana on her person, Turnage said.

Powell was issued a summons and released.
