Writers pencil in date

The Kenai Writers' Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. today in the conference room at the Kenai Community Library. Anyone wanting to share their work should bring extra copies.

Watercolor workshop across the water

Fairbanks artist Vladimir Zhikhartsev will teach a watercolor painting workshop Sept. 21, 22 and 23 in Seldovia. The fee is $185. Get paid to create

The Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Project Awards are open for application. Alaska artists may apply for up to $5,000 grants for emerging, mid-career, or mature artists to accomplish specific, short-term projects that have a clear benefit to the artist and the development of his/her work. The postmark deadline to apply is Sept. 1.

Artists in Schools seeking applicants

Grant applications are available for the Alaska State Council on the Arts' Artists in Schools Program (AIS). The Artists in Schools Program makes opportunities possible for students and teachers to work with professional artists through a full-time residency in their school for a minimum of two weeks. Any school in Alaska is eligible to apply.

Applications and guidelines for Artists in Schools are available online only http://alaska.cgweb.org. The deadline for applications is Nov. 1.

Poetry out loud luring students

High school students in Alaska are invited to compete in a national poetry recitation contest, Poetry Out Loud. The program encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

From September through February, schools are invited to participate in classroom and schoolwide contests, with students advancing to a state competition in March. State champions will advance to the national finals April 27-29 in Washington, D.C.

High schools that wish to participate must contact the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Home school students should coordinate with local high

Gallery hosts summer artists

Fireweed Gallery is hosting meet-the-artist sessions this summer at its gallery in Homer. Artists will be available this month to exhibit and talk about their work. Demonstrations and workshops are scheduled, with demonstrations at the gallery and workshops at the Homer Council on the Arts.

Council offers art fellowship

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is accepting applications for the 2007 Connie Boochever Fellowship in visual arts. The $2,500 fellowship is for emerging artists pursuing an art form on an ongoing basis. The deadline to apply is Aug. 31.

Kids' reading program ongoing

Triumvirate Bookstore in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna is hosting the Frequent Reading Program. Kids may sign up at the bookstore, pick out one free book, a reading calendar and program rules.

Kids are encouraged to read a book, bring their calendar to the bookstore, get it punched and pick up another free book.

Bookstore hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Artwork wanted

The Pratt Museum in Homer is seeking donations from artists and businesses for its annual Ritz fundraiser. The deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 17. The event will be held Nov. 3.
