Body of missing kayaker recovered in Prince William Sound

Posted: Thursday, August 24, 2000

WHITTIER, Alaska (AP) -- The body of a missing kayaker was recovered Wednesday from Black Stone Bay in Prince William Sound.

Michael McGovern, 38, of Baltimore, had been missing since Tuesday when he failed to return from a kayaking trip.

McGovern rented the kayak Sunday from Prince William Sound Kayak Center and planned to return two days later. When he failed to show up, the Coast Guard launched a search early Wednesday. McGovern's body was found floating next to his damaged kayak in the bay east of Whittier. He was wearing a life jacket.

Alaska State Troopers suspect that with the weather deteriorating and the waves building, McGovern probably sought shelter Tuesday in the cove. The kayak was damaged on some rocks. Waves were about 4 feet.
