Search suspended for man missing near Pelican

Posted: Thursday, August 24, 2000

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday for a man who disappeared while fishing near the Southeast village of Pelican.

Alaska State Troopers said Richard Reamy, 65, of Georgia was staying at a cabin near White Sulfur Springs and set out in a boat to go fishing Tuesday.

When he failed to return to the cabin later in the day friends notified the Coast Guard. A fishing vessel located a capsized skiff and a cooler believed to be Reamy's later Tuesday night.

A helicopter was launched and searched for Reamy without success. The search continued Wednesday.

Coast Guard officials said Reamy was not wearing survival gear and could have survived in the cold water for only a few hours.
