Lathrop air attack drops Stars to 0-3

Posted: Sunday, August 24, 2003

Lathrop quarterback Brock Graziadei threw four touchdown passes to lead the Malemutes past SoHi Friday night in Soldotna by a score of 33-20.

Graziadei connected with wideout Nick Varner twice in the first half, as the Malemutes raced to a 19-7 lead at the half.

SoHi fought back in the second half behind solid running from Dan Ghormley and two touchdown passes by quarterback Cameron Schneider, but it was not enough to counter Lathrop's passing attack. Graziadei finished the game with 230 yards passing on 27 attempts. He looked to Varner for a large portion of those yards, as the senior hauled in eight passes for 103 yards to go with his two scores.

Ghormley led all rushers with 175 yards on 22 carries, as SoHi actually outgained the Malemutes on the ground 212-180.

But the Stars turned the ball over five times, and Lathrop was able to wear Soldotna down for its second win of the year after losing last week to Kenai.

The loss dropped SoHi to 0-3 on the season, although Soldotna has yet to face a small-schools opponent. The Stars begin their Northern Lights Conference schedule next week against crosstown rival Skyview, which lost 46-7 Friday at Wasilla.

North Pole 54, Homer 0

North Pole put up 514 yards of offense in a 54-0 nonconference thrashing of the Homer Mariners Saturday in North Pole.

Junior running back Perry Monzulla ran for 183 yards, and scored on four of the 11 times he carried the ball. Monzulla had touchdown runs of 10, 44, 50 and 34 yards, helping North Pole to 394 total rushing yards on the day.

The win moves North Pole to 3-0 on the season. The Patriots defense hasn't given up a point all season, and Saturday's suffocating effort was no different. Homer only managed just 35 yards of total offense, and quarterback Canyon McKinstry was intercepted on four of the five passes he attempted.

Homer will try to improve on its 1-2 record next week, when the Mariners travel to Sitka to face the winless Wolves.

Wasilla 46, Skyview 7

Wasilla held the peninsula's top-ranked offense to 207 total yards and forced four Skyview turnovers to win its second game of the season Friday in Wasilla.

The Warriors were able to bottle up Skyview's Logan McKay and Brandon Cleveland for much of the afternoon, holding the rushing duo to just 75 yards on 22 carries. The two came into the game having run up 295 yards in Skyview's first two games, but were unable to break free against the Wasilla defense.

Skyview dropped to 1-2 on the season with the loss. The Panthers next face the SoHi Stars Saturday at Soldotna.
