Substantial announcements about the 2006 Arctic Winter Games have been promised for several weeks now and were finally revealed at Industry Appreciation Day in Kenai on Saturday.
The first founding sponsors, which include the KSRM Radio Group; Print Works in Homer; Kachemak Inc.; Alaska Communications Systems and the Peninsula Clarion-Morris Communications, announced their financial support for the games.
The preliminary amount of $173,000 contributed by these sponsors also was announced.
"This is the big stuff," said Stephanie Carroll in regard to the games. She was one of two speakers representing ACS at Satur-day's event and one of several spokespeople for the founding sponsors.
"The games are an international competition that enriches the lives of young athletes, while promoting deeper cultural understanding and sportsmanship among them, a value to our peninsulawide communities that is almost immeasurable in uniting us, in exciting us, in inspiring us to be even better than we are today," Carroll said.
Carroll added that the games represent "a vision in which the payoff isn't measured merely by the money spent here although the money will be both substantial and welcomed."
"The true and lasting payoff will be measured by the life-changing legacy left to the young people, ours and theirs, and to our communities."
