Houston leaves Homer in dust

Houston is having no problem adjusting to the Northern Lights Conference.

The Hawks, in their first year in the NLC, improved to 2-0 in conference and 3-0 overall with a 40-8 victory in Homer on Saturday.

The Mariners dropped to 0-2 in the league and 1-2 overall.

Houston quarterback Jordan Webb passed for four touchdowns in the game, going 16-of-25 for 242 yards.

In the first quarter, Webb had one touchdown to Bryan Mason and two touchdowns to Daniel Munoz as the Hawks grabbed a 19-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Webb found Mason for another touchdown and Houston led 27-0 at the half.

Homer finally got on the board in the fourth quarter, when Matt Tyrrell, who led Homer with 73 rushing yards, scored on a 5-yard run. Micah Ranum and Anthony Origer tacked on rushing touchdowns for Houston in the fourth quarter.

Valdez 69, Seward 0

The Buccaneers cruised to a Great Land Conference victory on Friday in Valdez.

Valdez is now 1-1 in the conference and 1-2 overall, while Seward is 0-2 and 0-3.

Taylor Russell led the Buccaneers with 119 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Also on the ground for Valdez, Cody Hedberg had 72 yards and a touchdown, Shane Cawley had 66 yards and two touchdowns and Taylor Bushong had a touchdown.

In the air, Bushong was 6-of-9 for 153 yards and a touchdown to Parker Hutchison. Bronson Koscielski had two catches for 70 yards for the Buccaneers.

Soldotna's game canceled

Soldotna did not play Chugiak's junior varsity on Friday because Chugiak's JV canceled. That meant the Stars had the weekend off.
