Kenai's Molly Watkins, right, runs near the one-kilometer mark Saturday during the Skyview Invite at Tsalteshi Trails. She finished seventh overall with a time of 20:08.6.

West High School's Letitia Luch left the starting line in the lead and never looked back. Luch led at every kilometer checkpoint throughout the entire race.

"I was doing pretty good for the first four kilometers," she said, "but the last one was pretty tough."

Luch said she didn't expect to win the race. "I wasn't really sure until I was a few feet from the finish line," she said.

Kenai Central High School senior Molly Watkins finished seventh out of more than 120 racers, meeting her goal of a top-10 finish.

"I know everybody was really nervous because this is the biggest meet," Watkins said. "It's bigger than state even, but I think everybody was happy with how they did.

"We have a lot of new people (this year). A lot of them did really, really well. It was a really good day, I'm happy with it. It was a good race."

Seward's Allison Barnwell broke into the top five, finishing fourth with a time of 19:51.3, just 33.9 seconds behind Luch. Soldotna High School had two racers in the top 20, Bree Mucha and Melanie Smith, who finished 10th and 13th, respectively.

West High went on to win the girls varsity title, having seven scoring runners place in the top 50. SoHi was the top-placing central peninsula team with a seventh-place finish.

Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar finished first in the varsity boys race with a time of 15:38.2.

"I was pretty confident coming into the race," Dunbar said. "I was kind of slow at the first kilometer, and so I picked it up a little bit and was able to work a small gap with my first surge. When I came up the hill after the third kilometer, I heard the cheers behind me and they were starting to lengthen and I still felt pretty good. Through the whole last part of the race I was just trying to hold on."

Mike Moerlein led the way for the central peninsula, finishing 11th out of more than 140 racers.

"There weren't as many extreme uphills (as last year)," he said, "Still, it was a hard race just because everyone from the state is here."

With everyone from the state at the race, athletes get a good chance to gauge their progress.

"The first race we did this year, one kid beat me by 30 seconds and I caught him in this race so I was happy about that," Moerlein said.

Service High School from Anchorage won the overall varsity boys title. Skyview was the top central peninsula team finishing in 10th place.

"This is one of the largest races we've had in the last three or four years," said Skyview Athletic Director Dan Bohrnsen.

Bohrnsen said the invitational went smoothly this year. "There's just no way we could have done this without our volunteers."
