Kenai man joins Navy, stationed in San Diego

Christopher Peck, a 2000 graduate of Kenai Alternative High School, joined the Navy and graduated from boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill., July 10. He attended Airman School in Pensacola, Fla., at the Naval Aviator Tactical Training Center from July 15 to Aug. 1 and now is stationed in San Diego aboard the CVN 74 John C. Stennis.

He is the son of Randy and June Peck of Kenai and husband of Sandra Peck of Nikiski.

Area students named to dean's list

Desirae D. Dix of Sterling and Kjersta L. Larson of Kenai were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. To be named to the dean's list, students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Skyview grads join Marine Corps

Marine Corps Pvt. Samuel W. Denison of Soldotna and Pfc. David J. Nussbaum of Sterling recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

Recruits began their training at 5 a.m. by running three miles and performing calisthenics. They also spent several hours in classroom and field assignments, learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training.

In addition, they received instruction on the Marine Corps values honor, courage and commitment and what the words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct.

The training concluded with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team exercise culminating in a ceremony naming the recruits "Marines" for the first time.

Denison is the son of Dorothy Lee L. and Mike Joe Denison of Soldotna and a 2003 graduate of Skyview High School.

Nussbaum, son of Linda S. and John P. Nussbaum of Sterling, also is a 2003 Skyview graduate.

Kenai woman graduates from college

Jessie Banas of Kenai received an undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis on May 16. She graduated with college honors and a bachelor's degree in environmental science, as well as a minor in Spanish.

Banas is the daughter of Gigi and Chris Banas of Kenai and a 1999 graduate of Kenai Central High School.

Kenai students graduate from SOU

Three Kenai students earned undergraduate degrees from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Ore., this spring.

Kristofor Fanning earned a bachelor's degree in athletic training.

Corie Weaver earned a bachelor's degree in communication.

Lola Vars earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
