Bronga, Dunbar win Skyview Invite

Posted: Sunday, August 26, 2007

The 2007 cross country season is off to a running start thanks in part to Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar and East High's Jaime Bronga, who each won individual titles at the Skyview Invitational on Saturday at Tsalteshi Trails behind Skyview High School.

Bronga, a senior, took her first title in the girls varsity race with a time of 19 minutes, 35.2 seconds, edging out West High's Letitia Luch, at 19:40.6, and last year's winner, Shoshana Keegan, at 19:59.4.

Despite training year-round, Bronga surprised herself by coming in first out of a field of 135. "There's so much competition at this race. Today, I was just lucky," said Bronga, who finished third in last year's event.

During the race, Bronga didn't capture the lead until the final kilometer. Bronga credits this approach to her success.

"It's easier and smarter to run from behind," said Bronga. "I just try to run with the top people."

Seward's Denali Foldager was the top finisher from the Kenai Peninsula, placing in fourth with a time of 20:01.4, while her twin sister, Rubye Foldager, came in eighth, finishing in 20:19.7. Skyview's Ivy O'Guinn also made the top 10, finishing sixth with her time of 20:08.

The twins were in first and second place at the two-kilometer mark, but were unable to maintain the same pace for the rest of the race.

"We're notorious for going out fast," Denali Foldager said. "But I'm so excited for Jaime. We're good friends."

Not only did starting too fast prove to be costly for the twins, Rubye Foldager was forced to battle through other adversity.

"I got a cramp in my stomach, but I regrouped in the end. If you're going to do something well, it's going to hurt," Rubye Foldager said.

Rubye was still pleased with her success.

"A lot of the runners from the bigger schools are strictly runners. My sister and I play other sports like basketball, so I think we did well," Foldager said.

As for the girls team results, West High took the title, followed by South and Chugiak. Seward was the top peninsula team, taking fifth place.

During the boys varsity race, Dunbar separated himself from the pack early on to win easily with a time of 15:54.8. Michael Miller of ACS finished in second place with a time of 16:31.4, and Jake Parsien finished third in 16:37.5.

Dunbar, the winner from last year's event, believes his training is the key to his success.

"I felt awesome, and I'm in a lot better shape this year. I log 50 to 60 miles a week, and it's really been paying off," Dunbar said.

Unlike a lot of other runners that like to start slow and pick off other runners as the race progresses, Dunbar wanted to lead from the start.

"I wanted to stay in the front and let the other guys get tired out. I can handle the front pace," Dunbar said.

Dunbar is a fan of the Skyview Invitational, because it allows Class 4A and 3A schools to compete against each other.

"It's nice because we can race the small schools. We don't always get the chance to compete against them, and there are some good 3A schools," Dunbar said.

Seward's Travis Price was the peninsula's top finisher on the boys side, coming in at 11th place in a time of 17:26.8.

Grace took the boys team title, followed by Kodiak and West. The Skyview boys team was the peninsula's top team, taking 11th place.
