CPR/first aid classes offered in Homer

The Homer Community School is offering a CPR/first aid class Sept. 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is an AHA certified course that covers adult CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. The class is registered with the Coast Guard. It is interactive and does not include videos. The cost of the class is $85 for all day or $50 for either CPR or first aid. Genealogy seminar coming up

The Anchorage Genealogy Society will have its annual seminar Sept. 8 at Loussac Library in Anchorage. The featured speaker will be noted genealogist Kathleen W. Hinckley, the executive director of the Association of Professional Genealogists and a certified genealogist records specialist.

The seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with registration from 8 to 9 a.m. There will be a light lunch available for $6. Seminar fees are $40 before Sept. 1.

Ninilchik fair winners announced

The Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik has released the results for this year's fair events. Parade winners were: for group, VFW Post No. 10046; horse, Connie Davis; individual, Martin/Lindeman; auto, Bob and Julie Welsh; and float, American Legion Post No. 18.

Department champions were: for horticulture, Delores Lindeman; flowers, Sherry Schneider; baked goods and confections, Ann Shill; food preservation, Lisa Anderson; sewing, Diane Bennett; needlework, Mary Lane; quilting, Maxine Clouatre; ceramics and pottery, Mandi Patrick; art, Sheila Sheldon; photography, Katie Epps; woodworking, Greg Tressler; crafts, Whitney Leman; hobbies, Thurmin Cranibus; dolls, Sue Elkins; fiber arts, Arlene Haines; Alaska Native arts and crafts, Sue Elkins; home brewing and wine, Susan Wesley; and booths, Martha's Memories.

Winners of the lumberjack competition in speed were Travis Glessing in first place with a time of 14.17; Dwayne Goff in second place with 15.02; and Jim Reed with 15.61. For accuracy, first place went to Mike Hill; Jim Reed; and Rick Wood. In combined competition, first place went to Travis Glessing and second to Jim Reed.

In the arm wrestling competition, Junior Women's Division, ages 14 to 17, winners were: Sammy Dalebout with first place; Kyenna McKinstry in second; Danielle Richardson in third; and Kathey Brenman in fourth. Senior Men's Division, 18 and over, winners were Craig Yarnes and Josh Jackson.

The roundhauling competition drew competitors from many ages. For the 0 to 8 Divisions, winners were: first place, Maggie Bursch of Homer; second place, Adam Ardenia of Homer; and third, Marissa Ormar of Caribou Hills. Women's youth 9 to 13 winner was Katie Duncan of Kasilof.

Men's Youth Division, 9 to 13, winners were: first place, David Schwenke of Nikiski; Joseph Ramirez of Soldotna, and Billy Duncan of Kasilof.

Women's Junior Division, 14 to 17, winners were Whitney Leman of Ninilchik and Michelle Edwards of Kenai. Men's Junior, 14 to 17, winners were Connor Cooper and Tony Espe, both of Ninilchik.

Women's Senior Division, 18 and up, winner was Katie Bursch of Homer. Men's Senior Division, 18 and up, winners were Josh Jackson, Salty Bock and Joe Klapak, all of Ninilchik.

State Fair Horse Show winners announced

Kenai Peninsula 4-H horse project groups met at the Ninilchik Fairgrounds Aug. 4 for their annual State Fair Horse Show. Twenty-five participants demonstrated their horsemanship skills, including members of a new horse group from Homer.

The fair organizers thank their judges, Bob Minnich and Emmy Dingman, and their announcer, Angela Lindeman, for all their hard work and perseverance in the rain.
