ANCHORAGE (AP) Vice president Dick Cheney will have a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser next week in Texas for Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.
Murkowski, who was appointed in November to fill out her father's term in the U.S. Senate, has raised more than $1 million for her 2004 election campaign.
The 2004 Alaska Senate race is seen as one of the key battlegrounds for control of the Senate. So far, Murkowski, a Republican, and former Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles are the only candidates.
Two Bush Cabinet members Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson were in Anchorage in early August hosting back-to-back fund-raisers for Murkowski.
Knowles, who entered the race less than two months ago, has yet to file his first campaign finance report.
''We've been tremendously successful so far,'' Knowles spokesman Bob King said. He said he had no estimate of the total Knowles had raised.
