Beaumont, Texas, and former Alaska resident Mildred Effie "Mickey" Shangin died Saturday, July 26, 2003, with her partner of 17 years, J.J. Mitchell, by her side at the University of Texas Hospital in Galveston, Texas. She was 48.
A memorial service was held in Beaumont, where she had lived for the past 30 years. Additional memorial services and the spreading of her ashes will be held on Happy's Mountain in Kodiak next summer.
Ms. Shangin was born July 14, 1955, to Fred P. and Feona P. Shangin in Ivanoff Bay. She worked as a laborer in construction while in Texas.
"She will be missed for her good humor and courage," her family said.
Ms. Shangin is survived by her sisters, Beulah, Genevieve, Margie, Sally, Loretta and Dianne; and brothers, Dennis and Raymond, all of the Shangin family; sisters, Katie, Valentina, Florence, Donna, Tina and Roseanne; and brothers, Evan of Nikiski and Paul of the Ozhuwan family; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Local arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
