I have had several people call me asking if I know anything about the big signs and advertisements for the Mattress Ranch that have gone up in downtown Sterling. Folks were speculating that possibly there would be a branch of that store opening here. I called the Soldotna location and asked if there were any plans to open in Sterling and was told the location in Sterling was purely for advertising. There is no plan to open a store here.

The annual Sterling Elementary School open house will be Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. It will be an little different this year, so you may want to check it out.

Teachers for grades one through six will give a presentation in their classroom that will cover the most commonly asked questions, and there will be a all-school assembly in the gym where Mrs. Ermold will share important schoolwide information. The teachers will repeat the same presentation during all three classes, so you can attend any one of the three to get the same information. The kindergarten will have an in-class scavenger hunt since their information was shared at the kindergarten parent night. If you have multiple children in the school, you'll be able to visit up to three classes during the course of the evening. Call the school at 262-4944 for more information.

When you go to the Open House, you may want to bring along your Safeway card. The school is part of the stores eScript program. By filling out a one time form, the store will donate money to the school every time you shop at no cost to you. If you don't use your card at there and just use your phone number, bring in a receipt as that will have your account number printed on it. If you have any questions about signing up you can call Chris Thorn at 252-8205.

The Sterling Senior Center will host the following events this week; Today: Exercise at 10 a.m. and dedication for John Feero Trees at 12:30 p.m.; Tuesday: Crafty Quilters at 9 a.m. and fun crafts at 10 a.m.; Wednesday: Exercise and board of directors work session at 10 a.m., and Jubilee Baptist Church at 7 p.m.; Thursday: Crafty Quilters at 9 a.m., fun crafts at 10 a.m. and card players at 6 p.m.; Friday: exercise at 10 a.m. and steak dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. $12.50 per person. For more information on these events you can call the center at 262-6808.

Just a reminder to mark your calendar for hazardous waste disposal day on Sept. 15 at the main landfill in Soldotna. This is the day to get rid of paint, anti freeze, fuel oil, etc. Paint, whether it is latex or not, is never allowed at the Sterling site, so this is the time to dispose of it in Soldotna.

News must be to me by Wednesday at 6 p.m. for inclusion in the next week's column. As always things are printed on a space-available basis.
