Russian Village man drowns in Yukon River

ANCHORAGE (AP) Rescuers have recovered the body of a Russian Mission man who drowned in the Yukon River, Alaska State Troopers said.

Nick Pitka Jr., 32, stepped out of a boat about 20 feet from the shore of the western Alaska village of Russian Mission. Three others in the boat told troopers Pitka struggled in the water before he went under.

Everyone on the boat reportedly had been drinking, troopers said.

Troopers were notified of the death shortly after midnight Wednesday and the body was recovered about 2:40 p.m. the same day.
