Posted: Thursday, August 28, 2003

JUNEAU (AP) Former Alaska Attorney General Bruce Botelho plans to run for mayor of Juneau in October, he said Wednesday.

Botelho, 54, has the support of current Mayor Sally Smith, who said she would not seek another term.

Botelho served as attorney general under Republican Gov. Walter J. Hickel and Democrat Gov. Tony Knowles from 1994-2002. He also served one term as Juneau mayor from 1988-1991.

Dick Knapp, a former Alaska commandant of the Coast Guard and former state transportation commissioner, has also announced a bid for Juneau mayor.

The filing period ends Thursday. The municipal election is Oct. 7.
