Safari Club awards scholarship

Kenai resident Christina Cupp has been awarded a $4,000 scholarship, which is granted in $1,000 annual increments by Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula Chapter of SCI.

Her scholarship essay supported shooting sports as a school activity.

She is the daughter of Karen and Rick Cupp and is a 2006 graduate of Kenai Central High School.

She plans to pursue a major in wildlife biology at Abilene Christian University.

McLane graduates

Former Soldotna resident Lani Cook McLane graduated in June from Oregon Health Science University School of Dentistry with a doctor of dental medicine degree.

McLane plans to pursue pediatric public health dentistry in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

She is the daughter of Sam and Susan McLane and is a 1996 graduate of Soldotna High School.

Moerlein excels academically

Former Kasilof resident Katie Jean Moerlein was awarded the Rufus Choate Scholar Award. To receive the award students must have a grade point average in the top five percent in the college for the year it is presented.

She is the daughter of Timothy G. and Kristine A. Moerlein.

Area students solve problems

The following students participated in the Future Problem Solving International Conference on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. in June.

The students earned the chance to attend the conference based on their performance at the Alaska State Future Problem Solving Bowl held in April.

The Junior team from Aurora Borealis Charter School took fourth place honors at the international event, and the Alternates Team, which Autumn Ball competed on, placed first.

· Junior Team — Lucas Bruxvoort, Freya Chay, Connor Haralson and Brandi Wagoner; alternates, Autumn Ball and Kaylee Tanner, all from Aurora Borealis Charter School

· Junior Individual — Kayleen Hanson, Nikiski North Star Elementary.

· Intermediate Team — Theresa Ramponi and Monica Maryott, both of Soldotna High School, Yuzhun Evanoff, Skyview High School and Mark Youngren, Soldotna Middle School.

· Intermediate Individual — Dillon Ball, Aurora Borealis Charter School.

· Senior Team — Lydia Ames, Kelsey Cain, Lauren Senette, all of Soldotna High School, and Amy Hundertmark of West Valley High School, Fairbanks (formerly of Soldotna.)
