ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Coast Guard rescued a Canadian fisherman Tuesday after his vessel grounded and broke apart 35 miles southeast of Ketchikan.

The Coast Guard heard a distress call at 3 a.m. Kenneth Seymour, 47, of British Columbia reported that his vessel was aground near Snail Rock.

The Ketchikan-based cutter Naushon was anchored nearby and responded to the call. Seymour donned a survival suit and said he intended to swim toward Snail Rock.

When the Coast Guard arrived, they saw a flare and knew that Seymour had made it to the rock. A rescue swimmer helped Seymour get into the rescue boat, the Coast Guard said.
