ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Police arrested a 19-year-old man suspected of killing a man and injuring a woman Tuesday morning in a hatchet attack in Eagle River.

Lamar Gathers was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, burglary and tampering with evidence in the death of Dustin Gard, 19, and an assault on Bridgette Blezinski, 19.

Gathers was being held at Cook Inlet Pre-Trial Facility on $200,000 bail.

Anchorage police said the attack occurred shortly before 4 a.m.

Blezinski suffered face and arm wounds and was treated at Alaska Regional Hospital.

Police said they received a phone call from the woman, who said a man she knew had entered the home and used an ax or hatchet to kill her boyfriend.

The woman said she'd been struck several times but managed to run to a neighbor's home.

The suspect phoned police from a nearby Wal-Mart at 4:45 a.m. and turned himself in.

Police said Gard and Blezinski knew Gathers but it was unclear why he attacked them.
