Geographically, Rotary District 5010 is the largest in the world, comprising the Yukon Territory of Canada, Alaska, and all of Russia east of the Ural Mountains. The task of District Governor Wanda Cooksie is to personally visit all 71 clubs in the District to share her vision for Rotary in the coming year.
Rotary International's slogan this year "Mankind is our business," is no problem for Ms. Cooksie who explains that Rotary is no longer a gender specific service organization anywhere in the world, but rather is local business people serving the entire human race, "I have no problem with this year's slogan, business men and women serving all of mankind is exactly what Rotary is all about," Cooksie told both the Kenai and Soldotna Rotary Clubs last week.
Pointing to Polio Plus as a flagship Rotary program, the District Governor explained how it started as a small pilot program in the Philippines years ago, "The vaccination program was so successful there we decided that Rotary could make not only the Philippines but the whole world free from Polio. And, it's our goal to proclaim the planet free from Polio in the year 2005 which is Rotary's 100th anniversary."
One of the District Governor's other goals for the coming year is to bolster the membership of local clubs, "Rotary is a service organization of professional men and women from young to old that reflect the various businesses in the community. Anyone interested in serving their community and the world should speak right up to a local Rotary member and visit a club," said District Governor Cooksie as she concluded her tour of Peninsula Rotary Clubs.
