A new leader has emerged in the August standings of the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby.
With just five days remaining in the 2002 derby, Scott Darlow of Houston, Texas, leads the August monthly standings with a 290-pound fish caught Sunday while fishing with Daniel's Personalized Guide Service.
Paul Lemek of Rockville, Conn., is in second place with a 278.2-pound fish landed Aug. 5 with Grizzly Charters, and third place belongs to Roland Frame of Banks, Ore., for a 261.2-pound fish landed Aug. 15 with Homer Ocean Charters.
Frank Stevens of Eagle River is in fourth place with a 240.2-pound fish landed Aug. 15 with Homer Ocean Charters, and David Opsahl of Austin, Minn., is in fifth place with a 235-pound fish caught Aug. 1 with Aurora Sportfishing.
Eagle River resident Clayton McDowell's 347-pound catch landed July 28 with Homer Ocean Charters is still the overall derby leader.
Two tagged fish, each worth $500, were caught in the past week by Colleen Fowler of Homer and Brendan Desjardin of Anchorage. The fish were sponsored by Village Barabara Texaco, A&W and RV Park, and Tall Tales Charters of Anchor Point.
There are 46 entries in the $10,000 released-fish drawing, open to derby ticket holders who release any fish 80 pounds or bigger.
