Bird Homestead Golf Report: Birthday tourney a blast

Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008

It was a birthday to match most birthdays! A fun day with beautiful weather and two of the greatest people on the peninsula. Elmer and Pat Bird both have birthdays in August, so in accordance the association puts on the Bird Birthday Appreciation Tournament. This year we had 14 people out for this event.

Hello and welcome to the Bird Homestead Golf Course for our weekly report. We are located 11.8 miles out Funny River Road and can be reached on the phone at 260-4653.

With help from his young caddy, Shelby Bird, and pulling him to the lead by Allen Dettmer, Roy Bird and Allen Dettmer took first place in the Birthday Tournament. Second place was decided by a card-off. Close, close run and every one had a great time.

Men's night was another huge success with 16 men out. Four teams of four, with a fight to the end. Only one stroke between first and second. A true birdie was had by Allen Dettmer on No. 3. Long drive went to Spencer Tachick. Come on out on Tuesday nights and join in on the fun. These guys are determined to oust Roy week after week. All help is welcomed.

Saturday is our fifth annual Fall Classic. This tournament is our biggest event of the year, and just plain fun to be had by everyone! Stanley Ford is sponsoring a hole in one. Never has anyone gotten a hole in one yet. We need a first.

A new Ford pickup would be a great way to get on the board! Alaska Legends is once again coming up with a fabulous prize if you are lucky enough to be on the first-place team. There will be all cash prizes as well as red lantern awards and mystery team winnings. Come on out and enjoy the day with us. The entry fee to play is $70.

Set up your team and set your sights to win. Call the clubhouse if you want a power cart. Hurry, though, they are going fast. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, be there by 8. The tournament is a shotgun start. Call at 260-4653 or come on out to the clubhouse.

Many thanks to our hole sponsors, and all the donated gifts.

We will see you on the fairways. Until next week.
