FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A Fairbanks man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping his estranged wife and then nearly choking her to death last year.

Superior Court Judge Mary Greene on Monday gave Joshua Twogood 15 years on the attempted murder count and 10 years for sexually assaulting his wife at his house on May 16th, 1999.

Greene described Twogood, 27, as unwilling to accept the break-up of his marriage.

The 23-year-old victim told Alaska State Troopers that Twogood refused to let her leave the house after she went to pick up her belongings that day. The woman said she was choked to the point of unconsciousness and then raped.

Twogood had pleaded no contest to the charges.
