Soldotna youth earns scholarships

Daniel Reid Ghormley of Soldotna recently received a Rocky Mountain College academic scholarship, football activity grant and music scholarship, all totaling $28,000.

Ghormley, son of Dennis and Sandra Ghormley, graduated from Soldotna High School in 2004 and was accepted to Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., based on his high school grade point average, course selection, ACT or SAT scores and letters of recommendation.

Parker graduates Naval training

Navy Seaman Apprentice Devon L. Parker recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at the Recruit Training Command Center in Great Lakes, Ill.

During his eight-week program, Parker completed classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness. Training was concluded with "Battle Stations," an exercise used to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.

He is the son of Shannon L. and James M. Bartell of Soldotna and a 2003 graduate of Marshfield High School of Coos Bay, Ore.
