Former Alaska resident Myron L "Mike" Morey, 66, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at his son's home in Kenai.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Halibut Campground in Anchor Point. Military honors will be performed by the VFW of Anchor Point. Sixty-six balloons will be released with messages of love. The family suggests that friends who are not able attend to have their own celebration.
Mr. Morey was born Sept. 4, 1943, in Pueblo, Colo., to Myron S. "Brick" and Lillian Morey. He spent most of his life in Colorado. He joined the U.S. Army in October 1966. He spent part of his enlistment in Germany as a Pershing Missile Specialist. He also volunteered to serve in Vietnam. He was with "C" Battery, 2/9 Artillery. He received numerous medals for his services and was honorably discharged in 1969.
In December 1970, he married Kathy McAfee.
"He was so happy to have an instant family with addition to his wife; he was blessed with a young son, Jerry. In 1972 he was blessed again with the addition of his son, Matt. They all lived in Colorado until 1980 when, he was transferred to Kodiak, Alaska. They raised their two sons there, and Mike always said those years were some of the happiest of his life. In 1988, he left Kodiak, and moved to Arizona, then back to Colorado to work for the BOR in Cortez. In 1993, he and his wife moved to Crawford to be near his sister, and his mother, He lived there until June of 2010 when he came home to Alaska, where he enjoyed 2 months in God's country," his family sadi. "Mike loved his family above all else, his wife, his sons and their families meant everything to him. He was so proud of his sons he would say, 'They just want to make me burst with pride.' He never considered his son's wives as "in-laws", but as his daughters. His grandchildren were his added bonus blessings.
Mr. Morey was preceded in death by his father; and mother.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen "Bat" Morey; sister Genevieve Yeoman of Crawford, Colo.: son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Garnet (Mace) Morey of Nikolaevsk; son and daughter-in -law Matt and Ronie Morey of Kenai; grandchildren, Jaimie Sonnier and Marcus Morey both of Kenai, Brent Williams of Anchorage, Lakota Mace and Aurora Morey both of Nikolaevsk, and Marque McCord and Zachery Johnson, both of Crawford; and numerous nieces and nephews.
