JUNEAU (AP) -- The Oregon Poison Center will handle calls from Alaska beginning in September.
Alaskans seeking information on poisoning can call 1-800-222-1222 and be automatically connected with the center in Oregon. The Oregon center will serve as Alaska's designated poison center for at least the next three years.
The toll free number will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
According to state health officials, 256 Alaskans died from poisoning between 1994 and 1998 and nearly 2,700 were hospitalized.
Congress in February 2000 passed legislation to enhance a nationwide system of poison control centers, according to the state Department of Health and Social Services. The legislation provided supplemental funding to certified poison control centers.
Alaska does not have an in-state certified poison control center.
