Swimmers wake up to brand-new year

Posted: Sunday, August 31, 2003

High school swimming teams from Kenai Central, Soldotna and Seward got a chance to get their feet wet Saturday as Skyview High School hosted a meet to kick off the season.

The meet was run as a quad meet, but was scored as separate dual meets. The Stars swept their competition, and Kenai and Skyview also were able to claim dual-meet victories.

"We're happy with it," said Skyview coach Dennis Reger. "It's the first meet of the season. We had a few good times, but most of the kids are new, so we're just getting a feel for what they're capable of doing."

Kenai coach Lee Moore had similar sentiments.

"It's been a great first meet," Moore said. "The kids have worked really hard, and a lot of their times are very close to their best, or are personal records for them."

While Soldotna coach Sohail Marey has a somewhat more experienced squad than the other teams at the meet, he said it was still a good opportunity for his veterans to get the kinks out and for underclassmen to show what they can do.

"The younger swimmers did a great job. Some swam their best times that's all you can ask for at the first meet," Marey said. "It's a small meet, and local, which is nice. The kids felt at ease. We knew our kids would win most of the events, so there wasn't any pressure on them.

"They were really excited. Some of them were nervous, even the experienced ones. Overall, I'm really happy with their times."

Marey said his veterans had some good performances senior Abby Kiffmeyer won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, and Adrienne Marey took the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle but Marey was particularly pleased with performances from freshmen Marit Hartvigson and Jenny Stenga.

Seward's Jacqueline Van Driessche had the top time in the girls 50 freestyle, and Kenai's Amy Jahrig, a freshman, took first in the girls 100 backstroke.

Moore also credited Amanda Keen with some nice swims in the girls competition, and Landon Mishler and Luke Baumer for their performances in the boys competition.

Reger said that Skyview freshman Alex Rodgers had a good day in the boys competition while Stephanie Lambe put up some good times in the girls meets.

"The rest of the team did a really good job," Reger said. "Everybody came out and swam hard."

The meet provided an excellent atmosphere for athletes before they head to the Homer Invitational next weekend, at which most of Region III will be present.

"The other coaches are real supportive," Moore said. "Swimming is such a mentally tough sport, and all the athletes really respect each other."
