Mushroom hunt slated for Saturday

The September meeting of the Kenai Peninsula Botanical Society will be held next Saturday in room 137 at Kenai Peninsula College. After a short meeting, the group will go on a mushroom hunt and plan another hunt for the following Saturday.

Homer halibut derby update

August standings for the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby will not be final until the last day of derby fishing -- Monday. As of Tuesday, the monthly standings were as follows:

1- Acsinia Rvetov, Anchorage, 300.6 pounds. Caught Aug. 6 aboard Luxury Charters' Quintessence -- Dale Seekins, skipper.

2- Colin Ocker, Houston, Texas, 296.4 pounds. Caught Aug. 7 aboard Silver Fox Charters' Silver Fox 6 -- Dan Rathert, skipper.

3- Martin Connelty, Anchorage, 271.8 pounds. Caught Aug. 24 aboard Silver Fox Charters' Fox II -- Scott Glosser, skipper.

4- Ricky Olson, Amery, Wisc., 263.2 pounds. Caught Aug. 21 aboard Silver Fox Charters' Bele Isle -- Brian Nolar, skipper.

5- Emory Goodman, Ocean Shores, Wash., 244.0 pounds. Caught Aug. 7 aboard Silver Fox Charters' Ultimate -- John Nicholson, skipper.

David Chapparo of Chicago remains the overall leader in the derby, which now has a purse in excess of $30,000. Chapparo bagged a 337-pounder July 9 aboard Inlet Charters' Fringe Benefit -- David Flower, skipper.

Derby officials also report that 70 tagged fish remain uncaught.
