Matarrese, Botelho lead Morgan tournament

Posted: Sunday, September 01, 2002

A good time was had by all -- and some golf balls were hit around, too.

First-round play of the Donald R. Morgan Kenai Golf Association Club Championship Saturday at the Kenai Golf Course ended with Matt Matarrese and Rita Botelho holding onto the gross top scores in the men's first flight and the women's flight.

Matarrese shot a 74 gross and Botelho recorded a 92, despite a double bogey on the back nine.

"I was hitting the ball really well," Botelho said. "But I got myself into some trouble and ended up in the sand on 11 and 13."

Although she managed to save par on the 11th hole, Botelho shot 2-over on the par-4 13th.

"I've got to work on hitting out of the sand," she said. "I don't know why there's sand on the course, anyway. I think it belongs on the beach."

Botelho ended the first round just two strokes ahead of Pam Martinez, who scored a 94 on the day. The two played to a standstill on the front nine, but Botelho managed to find a way to put some distance between them.

"We both had 45 when we came around the corner," Botelho said. "We played back and forth until the last two holes."

Felix Martinez shot a 70 net, with a 10-stroke handicap, to put him at the top of the men's net score for the first day of the tournament. He said his best decision of the day was abandoning his long game.

"My secret was leaving my driver in the trunk of my car," he said. "My 3-wood helped me. I played real steady and just hung in there."

Martinez said his group helped him to keep focused on his game while he was on the greens.

"Gordon Griffin and Tommy Carver were pacing me," he said. "As a group, we kept the ball in play."

He said he expects to have the same type of play with the leader group he will tee off with today -- Matarrese, Griffin and Jim Bradford.

"We'll play well together," he said.

His group tees off at 10:40 a.m. today.

Two players, Jerry Norris and Noel Widmayer, were disqualified from the tournament when they played an extra nine holes on the back nine after their round was complete.

They violated a U.S. Golf Association rule stating that in stroke play, when two or more rounds are played over consecutive days, play on any competition course to be used is prohibited. The penalty for breach of this rule is disqualification.

The two will still be able to play today and participate in the rest of the activities, course officials said, but their scores will not be counted toward the final competition.

Tee times begin at 7 a.m. today.
