MDA campaign set to kick off

Firefighters and volunteers from Central Emergency Services will hold their annual "Fill the Boot" campaign to benefit the Alaska chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This year's local effort has set its goal at $16,500 in donations. The campaign will take place Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Soldotna "Y." Oktoberfest fund-raiser planned

The Kenai Elks will hold its sixth annual Oktoberfest fund-raiser for KDLL public radio Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Kenai Elks lodge. Bratwurst, sauerkraut, apple cake, coffee and juice will be served. Live music will be provided by Alaska Blaskapelle, a nine-piece "oom-pah" band from Anchorage. For tickets or more information, call 283-7776.

Vets schedule picnics across peninsula

Veterans picnics will be held at three locations around the peninsula Sept. 18. Picnics will be held in Kenai at American Legion Post No. 20; in Ninilchik at the Ninilchik Senior Citizens Center; and in Homer at the American Legion Post No. 16. Music, games, door prizes and food will be available. All three picnics will run from noon until 3 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Hospice training schedule announced

Hospice of the Central Peninsula will offer volunteer training in October. Training days will be Oct. 17, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 25. Space is limited. To preregister, call 262-0453.

Mushroom identification workshop slated

A mushroom identification clinic with expert Dominique Collet will be held Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at River City Books. Space is limited to 30 people. For more information, call Josselyn at 260-5449.
