ANCHORAGE (AP) A 6-year-old boy died after he fell from a cliff near Kodiak, Alaska State Troopers said Sunday.
Mason Jones' mother, Jean Gilbert, called the Coast Guard about 5 p.m. Friday to report that the boy was missing from their cabin on Kizhuyak Bay, about 15 miles west if Kodiak.
Gilbert told the Coast Guard she found her son's hat floating in the water below their cabin. Troopers said Gilbert repeatedly called out her son's name and noticed the family's dog kept running to a cliff near the cabin.
An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew from Air Station Kodiak got to the cove within 45 minutes, the Coast Guard said. Alaska State Troopers also arrived and found the boy on the beach. He had fallen from the 15- to 20-foot cliff, the Coast Guard said.
The Jayhawk took the boy, his mother and a trooper to Kodiak. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer and the trooper performed CPR and rescue breathing on the boy for the duration of the flight, the Coast Guard said.
He was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. by Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center staff.
