August winners named in Jackpot Derby
The August winners were announced in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby.
Joseph Volk of Reedsville, W.V., takes first place with the 345.6-pounder he landed on Aug. 6. Volk also remains the overall leader in the derby.
In second for August is Gerald Schmitz of Waterloo, Iowa, and the 330.4-pounder he caught Aug. 9; in third place is Robert Killey Sr. of Riviera Beach, Fla., and the 300.4-pounder he caught Aug. 8; in fourth place is Paul Forsberg of Montauk, N.Y., and the 264.8-pound fish he caught Aug. 7; and in fifth place is William Stephens of Mobile, Ala., and the 260.4-pounder he caught on Aug. 5.
Homer's Borgman fourth at worlds
Homer's Stacey Borgman, 28, and her team of three finished fourth Sunday at the World Rowing Championships in Milan, Italy, in the lightweight women's quadruple sculls.
Borgman, along with Michelle Whitcomb-Borkhuis and Mary Obinski of New York and Maria Picone of Maine, finished in 6:42.20.
China won the gold medal with a time of 6:36.43 while Australia had the bronze with a time of 6:42.02.
The Americans were in sixth place at the 500-meter mark. The team then moved up, clocking the fastest time in the last quarter of the race, but could not catch Australia for the bronze.
