VALDEZ (AP) -- An Anchorage man and a Mexican were arrested on drug charges after authorities seized a half-pound of cocaine and $2,000 in cash, police said.
Samuel Gastelum, 25, of Anchorage, and Jose Montes, 20, of Mexico, were arrested Friday and charged with one count each of third-degree and fourth-degree felony misconduct involving a controlled substance.
The arrests resulted from a two-week investigation, said Valdez police officers and members of the Alaska State Troopers Mat-Su Drug Enforcement Unit.
Police said they learned that Gastelum would be coming to Valdez from Anchorage with cocaine in his vehicle.
''We pulled them over as they were headed into town, coming through a construction zone,'' said Valdez Police Chief Joe Michaud.
The street value of the cocaine was about $13,000, according to charging documents.
