Association tourney draws field of 75

Weather shines on Kenai golfers

Posted: Sunday, September 03, 2000

Clear skies and warm weather greeted golfers participating in the second annual Kenai Golf Association Championship Saturday at the Kenai Golf Course. The tournament attracted 75 of the association's approximately 100 members.

"We're lucky to get weather this nice," golfer Pam Martinez said. Other players were equally enthusiastic about the weather for this year's event, a welcome departure from the colder, windy weather of last year's competition.

On Saturday golfers played in five flights, four for men and one for women, with handicapped stroke play as the format. The tournament will conclude today when the low net winners of each men's flight face off in match play.

Jim Kimble had the low net for the first flight with a 71. Dan Young had the low net for the second with a 72. For the low net for the third flight, Don Schreiner and Clayton Young played off against each other. Schreiner emerged victorious with a 72. Al Brunner had the low net for the fourth flight with a 73.

Today, Kimble will play Brunner and Young will play Schreiner.

Patsy Bird had the low net for the ladies flight with a 75.

Kimble, an avid golfer, was satisfied with his performance and his score Saturday and was excited to compete in today's action.

"It was with a lot of satisfaction to play ... to my potential," the 66-year-old said. "Having been a former winner of the association (tournament) several years ago, it's nice to get back into the winner's circle again. At my age it's nice to give these guys a run for their money."

Winners for the longest drive were Gilbert Arellano and Pam Martinez.

Closest to the pin were, for No. 5, Chuck Ruppenthal, 12 feet, 2 inches; No. 1, Paula Crowley, 15 feet, 5 inches; No. 10, Dave Kerkvliet, 6 feet, 3 1/2 inches; and for No. 14, Art McComsey, 6 feet, 10 3/4 inches.

Those who had the highest net score for each flight will receive a free group lesson, complements of Kenai Golf Course pro Bill Engberg.

Jackie Johnson had the highest net for the ladies flight.

"It's like my bowling score," she said.

All participants were treated to a cold-cut buffet Saturday, complements of the Morgans, who operate the course. Don Morgan played Saturday.

"We're having an enjoyable time," he said.

Felix Martinez, tournament director, announced the winners and their scores before inviting golfers to enjoy a large barbeque-style dinner.

"The ones who won will be the ones sticking around for the food," he explained.

The championship, formerly the one-day Fall Classic, emerged as the answer to the Kenai Chrysler Open. The Chrysler-sponsored event attracts professional golfers from other states so association members saw the need for their own tournament, which is open only to association golfers.
