ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Green Party of Alaska has chosen a replacement for gubernatorial candidate Desa Jacobsson, who dropped out of the race.
The party's statewide council met Friday night and recommended that lieutenant governor nominee Diane Benson be the new gubernatorial candidate when Jacobsson formally withdraws from the race.
In a letter sent to party officials two days after the primary election, Jacobsson said she was dropping out of the race to attend to family matters. She did not elaborate.
Jim Sykes with the Green Party says the party must wait until Jacobsson formally withdraws before it can officially nominate Benson.
At that time, Benson's replacement in the race for lieutenant governor will also be named, Sykes said. The party hopes to have all the paperwork done and replacements announced by Sept. 9, he said.
