Clayton Brockel, left, founding director of Kenai Peninsula College, and Boyd Shaffer stand at the head of the nature trail that was named for Shaffer in a ceremony last month at the college. Shaffer began teaching at the college in 1966. As an artist and naturalist, he often led students along the trail that begins by the college and runs along Slikok Creek and the Kenai River. As Shaffer retires this month, he and his wife Susan are moving to Belize, Central America.
