Kenai Golf Report: Weather being nice to golfers

Posted: Wednesday, September 03, 2003

The weather in unbelievable and the Kenai Golf Course is in wonderful shape. We're certainly hoping this coming weekend the weather continues during the Kenai/Birch Ridge Association tournament.

Golfers have until Friday to get an application in to play. All golfers participating must be either a Kenai Golf Association or Birch Ridge Golf Association member with a current handicap.

Men's Night

The winning team with 1-under included Fred Thompson, Ron Stafford and Jerry Norris. The second-place team shooting even par included Cal Larson, Clayton Dolan and Tom Vincent. Those winning third place in a chip-off included Cliff Baker, Felix Martinez and Luis Rosano.

The slugger of the week was Gary Katsion with the longest drive. Felix Martinez had closest to the pin on No. 10 to win the third-place chip-off for his team.

Glow Ball

The Glow Ball Tournament will be Sept. 28 starting at 9 p.m. at the Kenai Golf Course.

The glow balls will be available at the clubhouse. The balls glow, the flagsticks glow and golfers wear glow sticks and glow too.

It is always so much fun playing in the dark with those glow balls. Get your four-person team together and sign up to play in the night golf tourney.

Tree shots?

Golf balls are hit into the woods and are hit through trees quite often. How many times have you seen a ball stay in a tree? Well, while playing golf with Cliff Baker and Tom Vincent recently, we had it happen twice on the front nine.

Cliff hit a root shot and his ball went up in a spruce tree. It was not too high so the branch was pulled down to let the ball fall. Cliff took an unplayable lie with a one-stroke penalty and we went on our way to No. 4.

Tom Vincent hit a third shot to No. 6 from the second fairway. His ball landed at the top of the tree. It was in plain sight. The tree was far too huge to shake. So, according to United States Golf Association rules, Tom had to take a lost ball since the ball was too high in the tree to identify it as his ball. So, that tree shot cost Tom two strokes.

Especially for Keith Stuart

And for any golfer who has experienced the game and can relate to this poem, written anonymously, and passed to me by Todd Eskelin.

In my hand I hold a ball ....

White and dimpled, rather small ....

Oh, how bland it does appear ....

This harmless looking little sphere ....

By its size I could not guess ....

The awesome strength it does possess ....

But since I fell beneath its spell ....

I've wandered through the fires of hell ....

My life has not been quite the same ....

Since I chose to play this stupid game ....

It rules my mind for hours on end ....

A fortune it has made me spend ....

It has made me swear and yell and cry ....

I hate myself and want to die ....

It promises a thing called par ....

If I can hit it straight and far ....

To master such a tiny ball ....

Should not be very hard at all ....

But my desires the ball refuses ....

And does exactly like it chooses ....

It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies ....

And even disappears before my eyes ....

Often it will take a whim ....

To hit a tree or take a swim ....

With miles of grass on which to land ....

It finds a tiny patch of sand ....

Then has me offering up my soul ....

If only it would find the hole ....

It's made me whimper like a pup ....

And swear that I will give it up ....

And take a drink to ease my sorrow ....

But the ball well knows ....

I'll be back tomorrow!!!!
