Skyview girls win Homer Invitational

Posted: Sunday, September 03, 2006

The Skyview girls and Anchorage Christian Schools boys won team titles Friday at the Homer Invitational at Homer High School.

The Skyview girls tied with Anchorage Christian Schools with 21 points, so the team title came down to the sixth runner. Mallory Millay had a 13th place finish to beat Kelsey Lobato’s 16th place to give the title to Skyview.

Nychele Fischetti toured the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 43 seconds, to defeat runner-up Ivy O’Guinn of Skyview by 19 seconds. Skyview also got a fifth from Marquee Lucas, a seventh from Michaela Hutchison, an eighth from Amanda Millay and a 12th from Ariel Barker.

Other peninsula finishers in the top 10 were Soldotna’s Kailey Mucha at fourth and Kenai’s Kalee Alsworth at sixth.

ACS won the boys team title with 20 points while Skyview was second at 62. ACS had the top three runners with Michael Miller, Carlos Arias and Hollis Troxel. In the top 10 from the peninsula were Kenai’s Levi Sutton at fourth, Skyview’s Mike Moerlein at fifth, Kenai’s Corey Rainey at seventh, Skyview’s Tommy Honer at ninth and Homer’s Garrett Hoanin at 10th.

Palmer Invitational

Kodiak’s Cory Pena and Seward’s Denali Foldager took home top honors at the Palmer Invitational Saturday at Janicek Trails in Palmer.

Pena covered the 5-kilometer course at Palmer High School in 16 minutes, 42.73 seconds, Foldager crossed the line behind 20 boys in 19:58.29. Foldager’s sister, Rubye, was 18 seconds behind her sister to claim second place in the girls race.

A new format used at the races this season. Putting the top three boys and girls from each team on the trail at the same time, in a flight race of sorts. There was also a race for the four, five and six runners, with both boys and girls running together.

Skyview’s Ivy O’Guinn crossed the finish line in third place in the girls’ 1-2-3 race with a time of 20 minutes, 18.01 seconds. Erick Romig was the top peninsula finisher on the boys side, placing 10th in the 1-2-3 race. Cook Inlet Academy’s Holly Kopp had a good showing for the Eagles, placing 10th in the girls 1-2-3 race.

Marquee Lucas of Skyview took top honors in the 4-5-6 race. Afterwards, she told the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman that she enjoyed the race’s different format.

“I had to work to stay within my pace and not go too fast,” Lucas said. “I’m normally the No. 5 runner on the team, so having a chance to run for first place was really exciting.”

Early morning rain made the Janecek Trails at Palmer High School slippery under foot for the 385 runners from 17 schools participating in the meet.
